One of the hallmark experiences of Indigenous populations around the world is territorial dispossession. For the Maasai of northern Tanzania, the story is no different.
The combined forces of government, business and conservation groups have cut deeply into the Maasai’s way of life, resources and, indeed, survival. But they have fought back at every turn, and recently scored an important victory in the East Africa Court of Justice. Gwen talks to Elizabeth Fraser of the Oakland Institute, and co-author of Losing the Serengeti, on what this legal victory means for the Maasai struggle.
