Anuradha Mittal Speaks with Activists About GMOs and the WTO

Over 6 years ago, the European Union banned genetically modified food. At the behest of biotech companies like Monsanto, the United States government sued the EU within the WTO's dispute settlement process. Supachai, the former director general of the WTO, recently suggested that the EU had already lost the case, but the decision has not been formally annouced by the WTO. Several activists from accredited Non-Governmental Organizations had a scheduled meeting inside the convention centre with Pascal Lamy, the current WTO director general, where they were to present a petition againt Genetically Modified Foods, or GMOs, signed by organizations representing about 60 million people. Instead, they were met by WTO deputy director general, Alejandro Jara.

Afterward, Anuradha Mittal interviewed several of these activists, including Caroline Lucas of the European Parliament, Vandana Shiva, Meena Raman the chair of Friends of the Earth International, and French farmer Jose Bove.
